Flag Half Staff notice For Forest Service offices

It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of acting Engine Captain William "Bill" Jaros, an employee of the Six Rivers National Forest (NW California) who lost his life on July 8, 2017 while participating in physical training.

Bill was a firefighter with the Forest Service for over 12 years on an engine crew assigned on the Gasquet/National Recreation Area Ranger District.

He was on a conditioning hike with several crew members and became ill, then collapsed. Immediate life-saving efforts were initiated, however Bill was not able to be revived.

In honor of this brave man who lost his life serving the American people, and in honor of his family, who lost their loved one, I am ordering all Forest Service facilities to fly the United States flat at half-staff from sunset on Thursday, July 13, 2017 to sunset on Tuesday, July 18, 2017.

Please keep Bill’s family, friends, and co-workers in your thoughts and prayers and join me in honoring his dedicated service.
