August 21, 2017

There has been great expectation and hype leading up to the 2017 National solar eclipse on Monday, August 21st. Pinedale filled up with visitors from around the globe. Many headed into the mountains to view the eclipse from secluded locations high in the wilderness. Pinedale was just slightly south out of the shadow path, but Jackson, Bondurant, Union Pass, Dubois, and Riverton were in the "totality" zone. Pinedale held an Eclipse Festival filled with lots of fun things to do, concerts, and educational experiences. White Pine ski area offered scenic chairlift rides for viewers to watch from the top of the ski hill mountain. Wilderness trailhead parking lots filled to capacity and beyond. Cars and campers lined the sides of the roads as thousands of people poured in to find a great vantage point. The Forest Service ultimately had to close off certain roads to incoming traffic because there was no more room to partk. Despite it all, everyone was relaxed and patient and seemed to have a great time in the days leading up to the big event.
