Fishing for The Fight

‘Fishing for The Fight’ (FFF) is a new fly fishing competition fundraiser in support of Kickin’ Cancer in Sublette County. FFF was started in 2017 with its first tournament held in July fishing waters around Pinedale. The organization raised more than $80,000 which was donated to Kickin’ Cancer. 100% of the funds raised go to help people struggling with fighting cancer. Money helps with their medical bills; travel, food, and lodging to get to treatment centers; and other expenses for the patients and their families. Fishing for The Fight was founded by Pinedale resident Chauncey Goodrich. "Sublette County is very rural and the communities are small. Cancer patients have to travel a long ways to get treatment. All the funds raised by the tournament go to help people with cancer," said Goodrich. "Our goal is to expand to have fishing beats in all 23 counties of Wyoming and to raise $250,000 per year." The 2017 tournament started with eight teams fishing beats assigned on a random draw, first-come, first-serve basis. All the beats are on private walk wade streams around the county. Team entry fee was $3500. FFF is a two-day, catch and release fly fishing tournament. Participants join as teams of two fishing contestants. Fishing "beats" are assigned to the team and they can only fish in those waters. The beats are carefully selected and are by permission on streams and rivers going through private land. Only two contestants can be fishing at any given time. Only one member of a team may be a professional fulltime or part-time fresh or saltwater fly-fishing guide or captain. Fishing is only with flies using barbless hooks. No lures, bait our other methods of fishing such as spin casting or bait fishing are allowed. Scoring is based on the best of eight fish caught during the day. A penalty is assessed for any fish killed or ruled by the guide in the group to be unable to survive. Awards are given for, "FIRST" "MOST" and "BIGGEST". The winning team is the team with the most accumulated points. Their names are permanently engraved on the FFF tournament trophy which is displayed by the tournament host for the subsequent year. The organization has just completed a video showing highlights from the 2017 inaugural tournament which was held in July. They hope to raise awareness and interest to get additional beats and more fishing team participants for next year’s tournament.
