A picture is worth a thousand words... So for every painting Ruth has done, there are many stories behind the process. Some are short, some take more time. When painting on location the senses are all part of the process. Birds make the music. The scent of the pines or sage enrich the experience. The sun can move too fast or the wind blows too hard. Insects bite! A storm might come up!
Inside the home studio things are different. No wind or sun moving, no birds or pines. So, Ruth has to recreate the good mood to finish a painting, if it didn’t happen in the field. "What was it I was trying to say? How did I design for that?" Photo references just aren’t enough, except she does depend on them for the animals that do not cooperate.
Ruth loves starting, but can have trouble finishing. She says "perfectionism" can get in the way. Knowing that she is a "flawed perfectionist" helps. There have been piles of unfinished works in her studio that have grown over the years. Somehow they have been speaking to Ruth lately, telling her how to solve problems to help finish. Some never will be finished, just lessons learned, part of the process.
The time is approaching to put paintings on display. Ruth will be hosting a one person art show at the Senior Center, 429 East First Street, Marbleton, Wyoming, on the evening of Friday, November 17, 2017, from 5:00 to 7:30PM. She will have 50 paintings of various sizes, subjects and prices. There will be door prizes, snacks and drinks while you enjoy Ruth’s efforts to portray the landscapes and wildlife of the Rocky Mountain Region. Maybe a painting will tell you a story. 30% of the sales will be donated to the Senior Center.
