Sublette County Rural Health Care District employee Laura Lopeman, and community member Jim Huntley, will be leading a six week Healthy U Workshop Series starting January 18th. Healthy U is a community health program offered in collaboration with University of Wyoming's Wyoming Center on Aging’s implementation of Stanford University’s renowned, evidence-based Chronic Disease Self-Management Program. Stanford University's program exists in all 50 states; where Wyoming has been the most recent state to adopt it.
"We are excited to offer this program as a valuable resource to the residents of Sublette County," shares Laura Lopeman, a 11 year Licensed Practical Nurse and Lab Technician at the health care district. "It is a workshop that empowers people with chronic disease to play a more active role in their own health management."
Topics covered throughout the series include: (1) techniques to deal with problems like frustration, fatigue, pain, and isolation; (2) appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance; (3) appropriate use of medications; (4) communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals; (5) nutrition; (6) decision-making, and (7) how to evaluate new treatments.
According to the program research, those who have participated in this program demonstrate a significant improvement in exercise, cognitive symptom management, communication with physicians, self-reported general health, health distress, fatigue, disability, and social/role activities limitations. They also spend fewer days in the hospital and tend toward fewer outpatient visits and hospitalizations. The series will be led by certified instructors, Laura Lopeman and Jim Huntley. Anyone is welcome to participate; those who suffer from one or more chronic illnesses may find Healthy U particularly useful. Caregivers and friends of those who would benefit from health self-management also make great participants.
The sessions will be on Thursdays from 9AM to 11:30AM in the Rendezvous Pointe classroom in Pinedale.
Classes are free and space is limited. For further details or to register, please contact Jim Huntley at (307) 859-8607 or email at jimhuntley@centurytel.net.
