‘Women in Wonderland’ Talk & Book Signing Feb 15 in Pinedale

Join Museum of the Mountain Man Curator Elizabeth "Betsy" Watry as she gives highlights from her 2012 book Women in Wonderland: Lives, Legends, and Legacies of Yellowstone National Park. The program will be in the Lovatt Room of the Pinedale Library on Thursday, February 15th starting at 6:00PM.
In her book, Betsy has profiled fourteen remarkable women whose contributions to and experiences in Yellowstone figured significantly in the development of the park. Ranging from park rangers developing nature trails and interpretive programs, to scientists researching bison and plants, to concessioners supplying visitors with comfortable lodging and curios, Betsy brings alive the stories of these spirited, ambitious, and independent women. Betsy’s talk will explore the enterprising lives of several noteworthy women as well as a few "behind the book" research experiences. "Women in Wonderland" contains a number of rare photographs and cites source material which will delight anyone who is particularly interested in the role of women in the nation’s first national park. The book won the 2013 WILLA Literary Award in the category of Scholarly Non-fiction.
In addition to serving as curator of the Museum of the Mountain Man, Betsy is a scholar specializing in nineteenth and early-twentieth century cultural history of the American West. Her primary research interests are early exploration, transportation, tourism, and women’s history. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Proceeds will benefit the Museum.
