2018 Perseid meteor shower offers dazzling views for skywatchers
August 9, 2018
The Perseid meteor shower, an annual night show in August, peaks on the nights of August 11 to 13. Luckily, the moon will be a thin crescent and set early, leaving a wonderful dark night sky to view the streaks of meteors. This year, skywatchers should be able to see 60-70 meteors per hour during the peak. The Perseid meteor shower comes every summer when Earth passes through the trail of dust and debris left in the orbit of the Comet Swift-Tuttle. Most of the Perseid meteors are made of small pieces of dust that burn up in the atmosphere. Earth passes through the comet’s dust from July 17 to August 24th.
