Paintings in watercolor, iridescent inks, and colored pencil by artist Charmian McLellan will be on display at David Klaren's Mystery Print Gallery in Pinedale (221 S Sublette Ave.) through July and August. The public is invited to a reception at the gallery on Thursday, July 11th, 2019, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.

As an admirer of Minimalist and Abstract Expressionist painter Agnes Martin, Charmian started experimenting with painting landscape colors in a grid of rectangles; then gradually breaking up the rectangles or squares into triangles. Some might call them "pixels", but the pieces are not computer inspired.

The title of the show is "Fragments of a Fragile World." In an artist statement, Charmian says, "There are a number of reasons why I chose this theme. Upon reading Christian McEwen's ‘World Enough and Time: On Creativity and Slowing Down’, I became more and more aware of what is called "Nature Deficit Disorder, especially among young people who are so engrossed in texting, cellphones, and computers that they don't take time to look up and out and see the hawk sailing overhead, the fox roaming the meadow, the doe gliding past with her twin fawns. The fact that the Oxford Junior Dictionary has omitted words such as lark, heron, leopard, panther, newt, otter, and kingfisher as no longer relevant and has replaced them with words pertinent to today's trends, as in blog, broadband, bullet point, cut-and-paste, and voice mail indicates the decline in children's outdoor play and exploration of the natural world.

As I take the opportunity to walk or ride along the wilderness trails, I feel so fortunate and grateful that we live where we do and that nature is abundant. I know that the animals are there and they see me before I see them. They remain wary and elusive. Hence, my "fragmented" depiction of some of my favorites, to include a couple that are considered endangered, but not indigenous to our part of the world. I've appreciated David Klaren's interest in my work along these lines, his encouragement, and his invitation to show the paintings in his gallery."
