California depredations
California’s newly established wolf population has taken to preying on cattle. The California Department of Fish & Wildlife reports that one adult cow and three yearling cattle were killed and/or injured by wolves from July 13 to July 18. All the attacks occurred on private property in Lassen County, in an area frequented by the Lassen wolf pack. The livestock owner has reportedly moved the cattle in attempt to prevent further attacks.

The Lassen pack is the state’s only confirmed wolf pack, although several other single wolves have been documented in California. Wolves in California remain under both state and federal protection.

Game cameras to count wolves
The Idaho Department Fish & Game is deploying more than 800 game cameras around the state in order to get a wolf population estimate. The Associated Press reports on the new monitoring effort in an article linked below.
