Salamander
October 23, 2019
The Garison family found this salamander in the driveway of their home in Bargerville recently. It was about 6 inches long. It is a tiger salamander, Wyoming’s only native salamander. It can range from 5.5 to 8 inches long, and is black and dark green with a mottling of spots, stipes or blotches of yellow or olive. This salamander is very adaptable. It can remain aquatic as long as its pond lasts, but will grow legs and lungs and move elsewhere if the water dries up. The blotched tiger salamander was declared the official state amphibian in February, 2019. Students at Pathfinder High School in Lander, Wyoming intitated the effort to add a state amphibian to Wyoming's official symbols.
