SCSD1 to start asking for student cell phone numbers
January 31, 2020
Sublette County School District #1 Superintendent, Jay Harnack, posted a notice on the District Facebook page on January 31 that they will soon start asking for the cell phone numbers of students in grades 6-12. Harnack cited safety and improving lines of communications as reasons for the change.
"Currently, we only have cell phone numbers for parents/guardians in PowerSchool. We use that database of cell phone numbers to communicate directly with parents. This is particularly valuable for crisis management events. We believe that during a crisis management event, communicating directly with students has great value," Harnack wrote in the notice on Facebook.
"We also think it has great value for improving the safety of more routine communication. In the past coaches and teachers have used a variety of other tools to communicate with students. Unfortunately, most of these tools do not provide the level of privacy and security we require. Recently, as we began the transition to the system we are now using for emergency messaging, it became clear that the same tool can be used by teachers and coaches to get information to students and parents, in a more secure format. To achieve this, the district needs to collect student cell phone numbers."
Parents who may have any questions about the new communication tool can contact the school district via their website, www.sub1.org, and click on the orange "Let's Talk" tab on the left-hand side. Choose to share a message regarding "Technology", and the school administrators will get it and respond right away. The school district administration office can also be reached by phone at 307-367-2139.
