The 2020 Pinedale Winter Carnival took place Friday through Sunday, Feb. 14-16. The carnival was sponsored by Main Street Pinedale. Events included a Mite Hockey Tournament, Cornhole Tournament, Skijoring, Pancake Breakfast, Cardboard Classic races, Snow Ball and Calcutta, Live Music by Columbia Jones Band, Kids SnoCross Race, and Frozen Spoke Fat Tire Race.
Skijoring is a winter sport in which a person on skis is pulled by a horse, a dog (or dogs) or a motor vehicle. It is derived from the Norwegian word skikjøring, meaning "ski driving". In the Pinedale Winter Carnival, skiers are pulled by a horse. The event took place in the open fields of the Bloomfield area, between the Hampton Inn and the Pinedale Elementary School. A team consists of one skier, one horse and one rider. Each team gets one run per day. A skier can be on a maximum of four different teams, a horse on a maximum of two teams. A rider may enter a maximum of two horses per division.
The highly popular Cardboard Classic Ski Race took place on Saturday afternoon on the Pinedale Sledding Hill in Burzlander Park. There were divisions for Juniors, Teens, and Family crafts. Rules for sled construction are they must only be made of cardboard, duct tape, glue and paint. No wood, wire, metal or plexiglass allowed. The entire craft and all riders must cross the finish line for the timer to stop. All pieces of the craft must be picked up and carried across the finish line. Spectators were kept behind a safety fence, of sorts, however a turn at the bottom of the hill proved to be a place where things could potentially "get western," as announcer Dave Smith put it. And he was right, much to the delight of the crowd. Each sled got two runs down the hill. Winners in each category got trophies, along with an overall winner for most creative craft. Costumes were encouraged.
