‘Non-essential’ travel between US to Canada and Mexico restricted as of March 21
No tourism or recreational travel between countries
March 20, 2020
Media releases from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Office of Public Affairs state that as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the United States is temporarily restricting all non-essential travel across its borders to Canada and Mexico. "Non-essential" travel includes travel that is considered tourism or recreational in nature.
The countries are working to ensure that supply chains for food, fuel, and life-saving medicines reach people on both sides of the border. Supply chains, including trucking, will not be impacted by this new measure. Travel for essential and urgent reasons will not be impacted.
This decision will be implemented on March 21, 2020, at which time the US, Canada and Mexico will temporarily restrict all non-essential travel across their US land borders. The measure will be in place for 30 days, at which point it will be reviewed by all parties.
