SCSD#9: Students won’t return to school this school year
School board approves continuation of Adaptive Learning Program homeschooling through June 4
April 30, 2020

BIG PINEY, WYOMING Sublette County School District No. 9 Superintendent Kevin Garvey issued the following statement:

On the afternoon of April 23, 2020, Governor Mark Gordon made the announcement that he would not be extending the statewide school closure that is set to expire on April 30, 2020. He also stated that the decision to extend the closures beyond that date would be the responsibility of individual school districts under the advisement of the County and State Public Health Officers.

Sublette County School District Number Nine (SCSD #9) has been providing a K thru 12 home based Adapted Learning Plan (ALP) since April 6, 2020. On April 28, 2020 the School Board held a Special Session to determine if they would continue with the existing ALP thru June 4, 2020 or if they would make amendments to the ALP.

Relying upon the information we have and in support of the Superintendent’s recommendation, they voted to continue with the existing ALP for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. In effect, we have no plan for a return of students to school this school year.

We are reviewing our options for the summer including the provision of a credit recovery program, continuing access for students to school based learning software, and summer school/transition programs. We are also trying to determine our ability to provide breakfast/lunch thru the month of June beyond 6/4/2020.

A key component of any plan for the school district to re-open, even partially, would then be the development of a re-entry plan that is approved by the County and State Public Health Officers. Most importantly we want a re-entry plan/protocol that is designed to give everyone confidence in our ability to keep everyone healthy and safe.

For now, we are remaining closed. We need the continued support of parents and guardians working with students and emphasizing the need for their children to remain engaged in their educational activities thru June 4, 2020. The staff will plan to finish the school year following our ALP and current delivery model. The school district’s administrative personnel will continue to consider options for summer programs while making plans for the start of the 2020-21 school year.

Our main priority now, and as we plan for the future, will be the health and safety of everyone. We will not be making any plans that jeopardize or risk anyone’s health or safety. As more information becomes available we will make every effort to provide you with that information.

We remain hopeful for the future and encourage everyone to do the same!
