J.C. Penney said that it will start closing 154 of its stores in mid-June as part of its post-bankruptcy efforts to reduce costs and shrink its footprint. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May, 2020. As part of its bankruptcy reorganization, Penney said it planned to permanently close nearly a third of its 846 stores in the next two years, leaving the company with just over 600 locations plus its online store, jcp.com, None of the stores in Wyoming, including the mother store in Kemmerer, are being closed.

A bit of history: James Cash Penney started a dry goods store in Kemmerer, Wyoming in the early 1900s. By 1912 he had 34 JC Penney stores in the Rocky Mountain West and continued on to build a retail empire across the United States. The "mother store" in Kemmerer, Wyoming, still operates today.
