Shingles vaccine available at Sublette County Public Health
June 11, 2020
Public Health wants to let Sublette County residents know that we have been able to order Shingles vaccine in larger amounts recently. We are caught up on the huge list that we had--so please call Public Health to schedule an appointment to get your Shingrix series started.
Shingrix is a two-dose vaccine series approved for individuals over the age of 50 years. The second dose is recommended to be given at 2-6 months after the first dose. Public Health keeps a list to contact individuals for their second dose.
Shingrix is over 90% effective in preventing Shingles (Herpes Zoster). If you have had an active case of Shingles, it is recommended that you wait until recovered to start this vaccination series. If you previously received the old live vaccine, it is recommended that you now receive this new more effective vaccine series.
Some individuals are having increased side effects with this vaccine. - A sore arm with mild or moderate pain is very common after recombinant shingles vaccine, affecting about 80% of vaccinated people. Redness and swelling can also happen at the site of the injection. - Tiredness, muscle pain, headache, shivering, fever, stomach pain, and nausea happen after vaccination in more than half of people who receive recombinant shingles vaccine.
Shingrix costs $165 per dose. Medicare Part D (coverage for medicines) usually covers this vaccine based on your plan/deductible. Public Health can bill BCBS, Cigna and United Health Care. If you have any questions, please just call Public Health--billing is always complicated.
