Museum of the Mountain Man honored by True West Magazine
August 15, 2020
Hundreds of museums celebrate the American West (including more than a few east of the Mississippi). But True West magazine says the Museum of the Mountain Man in Pinedale, Wyoming, is one of the best. In fact, the museum is #5 in True West’s Top 10 Western Museums of 2020. The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma took top honors. The entire list of best museums is in True West’s September 2020 issue, on newsstands August 11.
"All too often, the contributions of the mountain men have received short shrift in the Old West history field," says True West Executive Editor Bob Boze Bell. "That’s why we’re so impressed with the work of the Museum of the Mountain Man. It is truly a top Western museum."
Two-time Spur Award-winning writer Candy Moulton and the editors of True West selected the winners for this annual award based on extensive travels, research and first-hand experiences in visiting dozens of Western museums each year. Moulton cited the museum for its full-scale replica of Chief American Horse’s tipi, part of an exhibit on fur trade of the Rocky Mountain West. Another exhibit highlights the history of Hugh Glass, the trapper and pioneer who was the model for the lead character in the film The Revenant.
True West magazine is in its 67th year of leading the way in presenting the true stories of Old West adventure, history, culture and preservation. For more information, visit TWMag.com.
