Pinedale man killed in confrontation with Montana Highway Patrol trooper

A Pinedale man was involved in a confrontation with law enforcement in Montana on Friday, November 13, 2020. According to reports, the man was identified as Charles Craig Meeks, 38, from Pinedale, Wyoming. He was reported throwing "flaming objects" from a car window on I-90 near mile marker 422. Multiple brush fires were reported along the interstate.
Meeks was traveling west and accelerated beyond the speed limit when law enforcement located him. He was stopped about 19 miles down the road by a Columbus police officer and a Montana Highway Patrol trooper. He eventually stopped near mile marker 403 and refused to cooperate. "A confrontation ensued and the trooper discharged one round from a department-issued shotgun," according to a press release. Meeks died at the scene and no officers were injured.
The Montana Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the case. The officers from each agency involved are on administrative leave.
