January 30, 2021—ALPINE, WYOMING Stage one of the 2021 Pedigree® Stage Stop Race took place today in Alpine, Wyoming. All 24 teams completed the 31-mile out-and-back course that follows the beautiful Greys River.
Lina Streeper of Fort Nelson, British Columbia won the Alpine stage with a time of 2:02:44. Defending champion Anny Malo finished in second trailing Streeper by a mere 31 seconds. Diane Marquis, Érick LaForce, and Maria Torgerson filled out the top 5. (Full standings below)
Stage one is critical as teams set the pecking order and establish "who’s who" in the field. Streeper and Malo clearly reinforced that they are the primary teams in contention for the overall win and lion’s share of the $165,000 purse.
With the Alpine trail being soft from overnight snow and significant snowmobile traffic, discerning race fans have to wonder if any of the top teams were holding back to protect their teams for the next few stages. Mushers race tomorrow in Pinedale where trails are expected to be harder and faster with colder temperatures and less distractions from snowmobilers.
The Pedigree® Stage Stop Race consists of seven individual stages ranging from 30 to 35 miles each. Race courses are on USFS trails and are hosted by the communities of Alpine, Pinedale, Kemmerer, Big Piney/Marbleton, and Lander in western Wyoming and Driggs in eastern Idaho.
