The Sublette County Republican Party Central Committee held its first formal meeting of the year Thursday night, February 4, 2021.
The meeting was held in the meeting room at Aspen Grove in Pinedale, Wyoming. The chairman, Jim Robinson, appeared at the meeting via Zoom on a large screen TV in the front of the room, and a few other members of the GOP Central Committee also appeared at the meeting via Zoom.
A motion was made to censure Wyoming Congresswoman Liz Cheney for her vote to impeach President Trump when Democrats claimed he should be held responsible for inciting protestors who stormed the Capitol in Washington D.C. on January 6, 2021 as Congress was in the midst of certifying the electoral college votes, causing a lockdown of the building. Her stance on supporting impeachment was disagreed with strongly by many Wyoming Republicans who felt the calls for impeachment weren’t justified. A citizen created an online petition on the change.org website calling for Cheney to be recalled, saying she didn’t speak for the majority of Wyoming citizens who had voted her into office. As of the time of this article, the recall petition had 59,191 signatures.
Arguments were heard both in favor of and also against the censure. When the vote was taken, it was 7 in favor of censuring Liz Cheney, and 5 against the censure. Many other Wyoming county GOP Central Committees have already voted to censure her.
Wyoming law does not allow US Congress and Senate members to be recalled, so the censure was just a way of sending the feelings of the local Republicans to Liz Cheney.
