March 24, 2021
The Pinedale Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest will begin pile burning operations in the Sylvan Bay and Skyline Drive areas this week. These piles are from the Skyline Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Fuels Reduction Project, which was started in 2016. Fire personnel will be utilizing favorable weather conditions and the existing snow to ensure that the piles remain within their perimeter. Smoke impacts should remain at a minimum for the public. The Skyline WUI Fuels Reduction Project is a 2,247-acre project, designed to reduce fuel loading across the landscape surrounding Skyline Drive. The goal is to limit the spread of a high intensity/severity wildfire, provide greater defensible space lowering the risk from wildfire to homes and private property, and increase public and firefighter safety in the event of a wildfire. Firefighters will burn these piles under low fire behavior conditions resulting from cold temperatures and winter snow accumulation. Smoke may be visible from town during the day of the ignition and may linger in the area for a few days following. Piles are only ignited under certain conditions, including favorable smoke dispersal and weather conditions that limit the chance of fire spread. The areas will be monitored by patrols after burning is completed. Be aware that firefighters may be parked or walking along the road adjacent to the pile areas. Please slow down and turn your lights on as visibility could be impacted with smoke across the road. For more information on this project please contact the Pinedale Ranger District at 307-367-4326.
