What comes from a barrel of oil?

After crude oil is removed from the ground, it is sent to a refinery where different parts of the crude oil are separated into useable petroleum products. A U.S 42-gallon barrel of crude oil yields about 45 gallons of petroleum products in U.S. refineries. This is because of refinery processing gain. This increase in volume is similar to what happens to popcorn when it is popped. About 36% goes to make gasoline, 26% to make diesel, 5% to jet fuel, 5% for heavy fuel like marine fuel, 2% for asphalt, and over 22% for other products. A barrel of crude oil, depending on the crude (heavy, light) will make approximately 19 US gallons of gasoline, 10 gallons of diesel, 4 gallons of jet fuel and another 9 gallons of other oil products such as liquid petroleum gas, plastics, lubricants, heating oil and tar.

While some may cheer getting rid of gas-fueled motor vehicles and push to move to wind and electric power in the name of environmentalism, what many don’t realize is there are significant additional consequences to destroying the oil and gas industry and the U.S. not being energy independent. In addition to skyrocketing fuel prices at the pump and high transportation costs that will inevitably be passed on to the consumer in price increases, here are some of the 8,000 or so other product choices that are petroleum based that will become greatly reduced, much higher priced, or could disappear entirely from store shelves with the destruction of the petroleum industry:
