Precautions to keep water lines from freezing

The National Weather Service predicts frigid temperatures for much of Wyoming on Thursday, December 22nd. Nighttime temperatures are expected to drop to -26F around Pinedale and the daytime high is expected to be a frigid -4F. Thursday night temperatures are predicted to be -22F.
Freezing temperatures can cause water lines to freeze and burst. Residents on municipal water systems can help avoid broken water pipes by keeping a bleeder running in a sink or your bathtub. This means leaving on a pencil lead stream size of cold water at all times during the winter months to keep water lines flowing. The Town of Pinedale allots more gallons in the winter months for the purpose of running bleeder lines. Those on a well should not run a bleeder.
In addition, keep heat on inside buildings with water service and keep heaters no lower than 50F. Be sure to insulate any exposed water pipes in the attic, basement and crawl spaces. If need be, open cupboard doors in cabinets to allow heat to get to the pipes under sinks. Take extra precautions to protect water lines if you will be leaving a building unoccupied for an extended period of time.
