Tanner Butner places 14th in NFR Saddle Bronc

A local cowboy from Daniel, Wyoming competed in his first-ever National Finals Rodeo world competition in Las Vegas, Nevada in early December. 25-year old Tanner Butner went in ranked 15th after competing across the West in PRCA-sanctioned rodeos. He, his family, and all of Sublette County were riveted to the TV each of the ten nights as number 78 came up for his rides each night.
Known as the richest and most prestigious rodeo in the world, the Wrangler NFR attracts the top 15 contestants in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing and bull riding to compete for a share of the $10.9 million purse and the coveted PRCA Gold Buckle.
Tanner’s first night was Thursday, December 1st where his ride got him 80.00 points. On his second night, he scored 86.5. In Round three, he scored 87.00, which moved him up to 13th in the standings. The 4th night he scored 85.5 and on Sunday night, Dec. 4th, he scored 74.5. In the fifth go-round, Butner scored 84.5. Day 6 he scored 82.5. In the seventh go-round he scored 76 points. In the eighth-go he scored 76.5 which placed him 4th in the aggregate competition. In the 9th ride, he tied for 81.5 points rising to 3rd in the average. In the 10th go-round, he was bucked off and did not score. His total aggregate points came to 728 placing 9th overall.
After the final ride on Saturday, December 10th, Tanner Butner ranked 14th in the World as a professional saddle-bronc rider and brought home $133,481 in earnings.
Zeke Thurston from Alberta, Canada, won the Saddle Bronc World title at this year’s NFR, his third career gold buckle in saddle bronc. He also won World titles in 2016 and 2019.
