Rob and Melva Post

The Sage and Snow Garden Club awarded its first Garden of Beauty Award for 2023 to Rob and Melva Post on Bonnie Road near Pinedale. Their 16x20’ Riga greenhouse is brimful of winter and summer squash, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, cabbage, broccoli, cantaloupe, beans, peas, strawberries, herbs, nasturtiums, marigolds, and zinnias. Melva says the key to beautiful and healthy greenhouse plants is to begin feeding them with worm tea early in the season and progressing to manure tea (from Nancy Hulen’s 30 year old cow manure) in mid season. The greenhouse beds are elevated to make it easy for planting and harvesting the produce. The automated vents and fan keep the indoor beds at the perfect temperature for pollen development. Outside the greenhouse are three raised beds, two covered with polycarbonate lids, which house potatoes, carrots, beets, cauliflower, asparagus, and onions. Rob says the key to keeping gophers and voles out of the beds is to dig down below the beds and line the bottom and sides with hardware cloth/wire before adding the bed and soil. The greenhouse and outdoor raised beds are on an automated drip irrigation system making them somewhat self-sufficient. The Posts are meticulous gardeners, nary a weed in sight nor a plant out of place.
