Obituary: Ellen Reed
February 13, 2024
Lifelong Sublette County resident, Ellen Reed, died Sunday evening, February 11th 2024 at the Sublette Center in Pinedale surrounded by her family and attended by the staff of the Center. Ellen celebrated her 101st birthday in September. She was born on September 19, 1922 on the Scott Place near Daniel. Her parents, Joseph ‘Tobe’ and Jenny Huston raised Ellen and her two brothers, Jay and Hayden, in the town of Daniel. She attended the Daniel School and spent many summers working for the Sargents at their inn.
Ellen joined the WAVES during World War II and was sent to Seattle to work as a weather observer. After the war she returned to Daniel and reconnected with Hugh ‘Hammer’ Reed, who had also just returned from the war and was living with his uncle, Buck Baker. The two were married on September 1, 1947 and attended college in Laramie, where they both earned degrees. Ellen became a teacher and spent 25 years teaching first grade in Pinedale. Hammer predeceased Ellen in 1999.
Ellen and Hammer had five children, Mike, Sean, Sheila, Randy and Rusty. Tragically, they lost Rusty and Mike in accidents two years apart. Ellen is survived by her three children, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was also lucky to have daughter-in-law, Connie, son-in-law, Carl, seven step-grandchildren and seventeen step-great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Sublette Center for the loving care Ellen received there for the last four years.
