Skywatcher alert, Friday, May 10, 5:45PM
May 10, 2024
Recent intense sunspot activity has led to solar flare outbursts impacting the earth on Friday, May 10th and possibly into the weekend. The geomagnetic storm activity has caused either temporary or complete loss of high frequency (HF) radio signals across Asia, eastern Europe and eastern Africa today. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center, geomagnetic storms can impact infrastructure in near-Earth orbit and on the Earth’s surface, potentially disrupting communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations. There could be disruptions to internet, GPS systems, and power. Operators of these systems should take protective action. Geomagnetic storms can also trigger spectacular displays of aurora on Earth. A severe geomagnetic storm includes the potential for aurora to be seen as far south as Alabama and northern California. Wyoming could see greenish splashes of color tonight and possibly tomorrow night resulting from this sun spot flare activity.
