Pinedale pilot, John Douglas will be headed to Sulphur Springs, Texas, November 1st & 2nd to compete in the 2024 National STOL Championship Series. He currently ranks 5th of 26 in the Touring Class of the event. He is the owner of Emblem Aviation, an airplane maintenance shop at the Pinedale airport, and host for the new Rocky Mountain STOL competition event which is in its third year at Pinedale airport in August.
STOL, which stands for Short Take Off and Landing, began in 2020 with four events and has been steadily growing in national popularity. It is designed as a competitive series for pilots across the nation to demonstrate their prowess in a sport-oriented environment. Pilots compete in one or more events throughout the year, accumulating points towards an annual National Title for top performers. Imagine landing a plane in less than 11 feet and taking off in less than 15 feet. These competitions allow pilots to practice short take offs and landings in a controlled environment, building proficiency and confidence.
Proficiency in short takeoffs and landings is typically associated with bush pilots navigating backcountry terrain, but it is considered a skill that all aviators can and should refine. STOL aircraft are built, or modified, to get in and out of an area in the shortest distance possible. They can operate on and off airport, including on grass, snow, ice and sand. A traditional runway is not necessary. STOL aircraft are often used on ranches and farms helping with day-to-day operations, and in the backcountry for hunting, fishing, camping, and search and rescue. There is no size requirement for a STOL aircraft. The National STOL endeavors to introduce the excitement of general aviation to a nationwide audience, challenge pilots to better themselves, and foster the next generation of aviators. Their 2024 season has ten events, concluding with the Finals November 2nd in Texas.
