Pinedale Game Warden Dennis Almquist
May 5, 2005

South Pinedale Game Warden Dennis Almquist was named the 2004 'Officer of the Year' by the Wyoming Game Warden’s Association at their annual meeting in Cody in April. Almquist, who retired from the Wyoming Game & Fish Department January 2nd after 34 years of service, began his game warden career in Riverton. He transferred to the south Pinedale district in September 1974.

"Hunters and anglers often describe Dennis as one of those game wardens who was always there no matter where you went and his presence kept the honest sportsman honest and the poacher always looking over his shoulder," said Herb "Bubba" Haley, North Pinedale game warden.

Almquist was admired for maintaining an unwavering positive attitude in the face of grizzly bear depredations, elk damage and brucellosis. "By doing so, he was more than a veteran providing advice to young wardens, but also a role model and mentor to many of us, showing how to remain focused and positive," said Haley, who nominated his mentor for the award.

In 2002, Almquist was cited for his diligent patrolling of mule deer winter range, aggressive boating enforcement and comprehensive wildlife data collection in earning the "Wyoming Wildlife Officer of the Year" award from Shikar-Safari International.
