Slide Fire burning in Gros Ventre Wilderness
Managed as a wildland fire for resource benefit
August 1, 2005

A lighting storm moving through the Jackson area on Friday, July 22 ignited a fire near Lower Slide Lake on the Bridger-Teton National Forest (BTNF), according to a news release by the BTNF. The Slide Lake fire is located in the Gros Ventre Wilderness, one-mile south of Lower Slide Lake. The fire is approximately one–tenth of an acre in size and is burning heavy timber.

The Slide Lake fire is being managed to accomplish resource objectives that have been outlined in the Bridger-Teton Forest Management Plan, which allows naturally ignited fires to burn within designated areas under specific management guidelines. In the past, the policy for fire management had always been to suppress wildland fires. The objective of the wildland fire use program is to allow natural ignitions to restore fire as an ecological process and a natural agent of change within the Bridger-Teton National Forest.

As part of an effort to encourage a healthy ecosystem, forest officials review all natural caused fires located in approved areas for potential use as a tool to manage landscape resource benefits. This is called wildland fire use.

Currently there are no roads or trails affected by this natural fire. Fire officials will continue to monitor the area for any needed safety precautions. For more information, visit www.tetonfires.com or call the BTNF Supervisor’s Office in Jackson at 307-739-5577.
