Coalbed Natural Gas report available
USGS and BLM cooperative data collection project
August 31, 2006

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) have announced the release of coalbed natural gas (CBNG) data and analyses from a USGS - BLM cooperative data collection project.

The USGS, in conjunction with BLM’s Wyoming State Office Reservoir Management Group (WSORMG), is publishing these results in a joint publication: “Gas Desorption and Adsorption Isotherm Studies of Coals in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming and Adjacent Basins in Wyoming and North Dakota”, USGS Open file Report 2006-1174, 275 pp.

The data was derived from coal cores taken from 41 Fort Union Formation CBNG gas wells. The wells were drilled and cored by 25 cooperating gas operators in the Powder River Basin (PRB) and adjacent basins in Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota over the course of seven years.

This report was approved for distribution by the USGS Director on June 22, 2006. A digital version of the publication is available online at the USGS website: http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2006/1174/. It is also accessible through both the Wyoming BLM (www.wy.blm.gov/minerals) and Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (http://wogcc.state.wy.us/) websites.

The report contains analyses, interpretations and descriptions of basic CBNG data. This data include: CBNG content desorption measurements (lost, measured, residual, and total gas) from 615 core samples; high pressure methane adsorption isotherms (75 analyses); geophysical log and core correlations; selected comparisons of coal gas content with coal lithology/maceral composition; and other related data.

The project data is expected to be widely utilized by the public and energy developers. The data will enable development of more accurate and reliable gas resources and occurrence estimates and more comprehensive reservoir quality analyses to meet the needs of the CBNG industry, managing/ regulatory agencies, and other citizens or groups with an interest in CBNG development. Enhanced production of energy resources, in an environmentally sound manner, is the cornerstone of the Department of Interior’s strategic plan and the National Energy Policy Act of 2005.
