Car passing a working snowplow causes head-on collision
February 1, 2007

A California woman was killed in a head-on crash near Farson on Wednesday, January 31st. Linda M. Medellin, age 48, of Lancaster, California, died as a result of the crash.

According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol report, Medellin was southbound on US 191 driving a 1997 Honda Accord approximately ten miles south of Farson in Sweetwater County. The roadway was dry with some blowing snow. A WYDOT snowplow was northbound and was plowing snow in the emergency lane creating more blowing snow.

Randall E. Osier, age 57, from Rock Springs was traveling northbound driving a 2005 GMC pickup. Osier decided to pass the snowplow even though he could not see oncoming traffic due to the snow being kicked up by the snowplow operation. Osier moved his vehicle into the southbound lane of travel to pass and his vehicle and the Medellin vehicle collided head-on in the southbound lane of travel. The airbags in both vehicles did deploy. After impact, both vehicles came to rest off the roadway. Osier and Medellin were the only occupants of the vehicles. Both were wearing seatbelts.

Medellin died at the scene around 10:05 am. Osier was treated and released from Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County in Rock Springs. Osier has been cited for unsafe lane change.
