From late December until late March, for just $16, you can get up close and personal with hundreds of elk. The National Elk Feed Ground in Jackson offers sleigh rides through the elk herd. Start out at the visitor center, which is more like a museum. This is a good family excursion, with kids welcome.

The National Elk Refuge is managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS). It is one of 545 National Wildlife Refuges throughout the country administered by the USFWS. The mission of the USFWS is to work with others to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.

Directions: From Pinedale, take US Hwy 191 north to Jackson, approximately 78 miles. The Refuge and Visitor Center are on the north end of Jackson (follow signs), just south of Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks.
