The Museum of the Mountain Man, and Pinedale, are extremely honored and pleased to unveil a new exhibit at the Museum on Friday, May 4th: an authentic brain tanned, Buffalo Hide Tipi by Native American Historian, Michael Terry. Terry will be at the Museum to give a presentation about the tipi and exhibit display items.

Michael Terry has been coming to Pinedale for over a decade giving living history presentations for the Museum and Pinedale Fine Arts Council as part of educational programs each year during the Green River Rendezvous. His presentations are extremely popular and the audience seating is always packed for his talks.

Terry has made an authentic replica of a buffalo hide tipi that was captured from Sioux Chief American Horse at the Battle of Slim Buttes in South Dakota in 1876. He traveled to the Smithsonian to examine the original and take measurements so he could create his replica, duplicating as closely as possible, even down to the stitch count and patches in the hides. The original is considered too fragile to display.

The tipi, complete with items to furnish it with period-authentic artifacts, are all hand-made by Terry and took countless hours of painstaking hand labor. Measuring twenty feet in diameter, the Museum's buffalo hide tipi will be the largest one on exhibit in the world.

The buffalo hide tipi exhibit is a generous gift from the Gayle McMurry Kinnison Donor Advised Fund of the Wyoming Community Foundation. Kinnison was a long-time friend of both the Museum of the Mountain Man and Michael Terry.

The public is invited to the debut and dedication of this prized exhibit on Friday evening, May 4th, at 7:00 pm at the Museum. The program and reception will honor and remember Gayle McMurry Kinnison for her love of people, history and the West.
