Game and Fish offers kids' publication online
by Wyoming Game & Fish
November 3, 2007

There’s Wild Times to found on the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s Web site – that is, information and education found in the pages of Wild Times, the agency’s quarterly newsletter for kids, can now be found online.

Wild Times, a product of Wyoming Wildlife magazine and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, is a free newsletter published four times during the school year, and issues dating back to 2003 are now available on the Game and Fish Web site.

Janet Milek, aquatic education coordinator for the Game and Fish and the editor of Wild Times, says the target audience for the publication is fourth-graders.

“In Wyoming, fourth grade is the time where you really focus on Wyoming history and what makes our state so special,” she explains. “We produce Wild Times with fourth graders in mind to supplement all the other things they are learning about wildlife.

Traditionally, teachers had to sign up to have the publication sent directly to their classroom. Now, Milek says, teachers also have the option of viewing and printing each issue directly from the Web site.

“We wanted to make Wild Times available to more teachers in a cost-effective manner,” she says. “We’ve converted some back issues to files that can be easily downloaded and printed, so that teachers can use the whole issue or compile information from multiple issues to address a unique unit or lesson.”

Wild Times offers information about habitats found in Wyoming, careers in wildlife, lessons in wildlife heritage and an outdoor classroom section that provides activities for kids to learn about wildlife while outside. There are also games to help students solidify concepts through matching games, crossword puzzles or word searches. Each issue also has four wildlife profiles or flashcards with detailed information and photos about a particular species.

“We try to make learning about Wyoming’s wildlife fun and engaging, hopefully creating a whole new generation of wildlife enthusiasts,” says Milek.

Issues are available as PDF files at http://gf.state.wy.us. Click Publications on the left side of the page. Schools and other organizations can also request to be added to the mailing list to receive Wild Times quarterly.

The publication is just one of many educational tools offered by the conservation education branch of Game and Fish. In addition to Wild Times, Game and Fish offers classroom programs, lectures, workshops and the annual Wyoming Hunting & Fishing Heritage Expo, held each September.
