Fishery Workers to host annual conference in Wyoming
Raising money for scholarships for UW fisheries students

December 30, 2007

The Great Plains Fishery Workers Association is a group of six U.S. States and three Canadian Provinces that have formed a professional society to exchange information, share ideas with peers, and discuss issues that affect the fisheries resource on local, regional and international levels. The group holds an annual meeting which is hosted by a different state or province each year. This year is Wyoming's turn to host and the meeting will be held in Sheridan on January 28, 29 and 30, 2008.

The host is responsible for organizing and scheduling the meeting. The previous year's host transfers to the current host $1500 as seed money and, typically, registration fees from the attendees ($120 per person this year) cover the remainder of the meeting costs.

Members of the host state solicit donations of cash, merchandise, gag gifts and other items from various businesses and vendors to be used as raffle prizes or auction items at the meeting banquet. Proceeds are used to fund scholarships for fisheries students at the University of the host state. Any money raised this year will be used to fund one or more scholarships to the University of Wyoming.

The Wyoming chapter has provided at least one scholarship of $250 per semester each year since 2001. They hope to increase on that this year. If anyone would like further information, or would like to donate any items that could be used for auction, they can contact George Gunn at the Daniel Fish Hatchery, 307-859-8252 or e-mail him at george.gunn@wgf.state.wy.us
