Governor names Marvin Tyler to Ninth Judicial District
by Governor Freudenthal’s office
September 12, 2008

A longtime commissioner for the Third Judicial District Court and a former municipal judge has been named a judge for the Ninth Judicial District Court by Gov. Dave Freudenthal.

Marvin Tyler of Green River has served as a commissioner for the Third Judicial District since 1983, and was commissioner for the Sweetwater County Court from 1983 to 2001. He resigned each of these positions briefly in 1998 to run for political office, but was later reappointed.

As a court commissioner and magistrate, Tyler has presided over four to six jury trials and 30 to 50 bench trials and hearings each year. These cases covered a wide range of issues including juvenile justice, involuntary commitment, preliminary hearings on felony charges, family violence, stalking, small claims cases and misdemeanor criminal cases.

The Governor said Tyler brings to the position decades of knowledge of a broad nature including civil and criminal cases and mediation.

"It was clear in my interview with Marv Tyler that he has the bearing and the background to be an excellent judge," Freudenthal said. "He has more than 25 years of experience that will serve him well as a district judge. He also demonstrates a quiet competence and maturity that I deem essential for a judge. Submitted on his behalf were some of the best letters of recommendation from other judges and lawyers that I have seen so far in the years that I have been appointing judges."

Tyler called it an honor to be named to the district court bench.

"I am excited to accept the appointment and to serve the people of Sublette County and the State of Wyoming," Tyler said. "I hope to meet the Governor’s expectations."

Tyler has spent most of his life in Wyoming, graduating from Rock Springs High School and then earning his associate’s degree from Western Wyoming Community College and his law degree from the University of Wyoming.

Tyler has served on numerous committees and is a member of several professional groups, including local, state and national Bar Associations. In 2008 he was selected to the 2008 Mountain States Super Lawyers, a group made up of just 5 percent of the attorneys in each state. He has long been involved in the Rock Springs and Green River communities, volunteering with the United Way and other groups such as the Eagle’s Club. He currently serves on the Wyoming State Bar Mentoring Committee.
