The National Weather Service in Riverton has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for snow which is in effect until 5:00 am MST Monday.

A major winter storm is expected to impact western Wyoming and the Interstate 80 corridor through Monday. This new storm system will combine with an arctic cold front which will move southwest into the area Sunday evening producing sharply colder temps in the single digits. Northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph, gusting to 40 mph and periods of moderate to heavy snow. Total snowfall of 4 to 8 inches of snow is expected by Monday afternoon. The combination of these strong NE winds will reduce the visibility to near zero at times and produce wind chills to 30 below zero. Considerable blowing and drifting snow is also expected Sunday night and Monday.

Snow will continue Sunday night with new snowfall of 2 to 5 inches across the Upper Green River Basin foothills with 5 to 10 inches in the western Wind River Mountains.

Travelers should be prepared for snow-packed and icy roads along with sharply reduced visibility at times. Be sure to take winter survival gear and check the latest road conditions if travel is absolutely necessary tonight or Monday.

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving.
