Dave DeCaro (19), from Denali Park, Alaska, is 25-years old. This is his first year racing in the IPSSSDR. He has been running dogs since 2004.

A big crowd waited along the race course starting line in Pinedale. There was high enthusiasm and everyone enjoying watching the dogs and listening to the lively music while they waited for the race to begin. "Dogs Rule" banners were attached to the rope marking the race course.
Davis posts fastest time for Pinedale Stage Stop; Leads Overall

(Pinedale) —February 2, 2009—Wendy Davis from Lander, Wyo., posted the fastest time during Day Three of the IPSSSDR with 2:55:19. Sean Hard from Olney, Mont., came in second with 3:03:15. In third, Melanie Shirilla of Lincoln, Mont., had a time of 3:04:13.

Davis leads the race overall with a time of 5:53:23. Shirilla is second in the overall with a time of 6:02:51; Megan Routely of British Columbia, Canada, is third with a time of 6:12:38.

On Tuesday, February 3, teams will race a 64-mile stage in Big Piney/Marbleton before continuing to Alpine, Kemmerer/Diamondville, Evanston, Lyman/Mountain View, and finally Park City, Utah, for the final stage and awards ceremony on Saturday, February 7.

With its unique dog-friendly "stage stop" racing format, the IPSSSDR stops in a different community each night, allowing the host towns to show their hospitality. Festivities for mushers and spectators alike include pancake feeds, dog parades, banquets, carnivals, and snowshoe softball.

The International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race, the largest dog sled race in the lower 48 states, was founded in 1996 by Frank Teasley to make sled dog racing more accessible to the public. The race start was moved to downtown Pinedale this year. North Tyler Avenue, by the Visitor Center, was closed for the staging area. One of the northbound lanes of US 191 was closed and used as the race lane out of town in the morning.

This year the course for Pinedale was reversed. The Start was in town and the Finish was at the Upper Green River parking lot. One lane of US 191 was closed Monday morning and used for the race lane out of town.

John Barron (#16) is from Boulder, Montana. He has been into sled dogs since 1978. At age 60, he has raced in 27 Iditarods. This is his first time in the IPSSSDR.

Jeff King (#18) is from Denali Park, Alaska. He won the 1999 IPSSSDR. At age 53, he has been mushing for more than 30 years and has logged more than 100,000 miles on a sled. He won the 1,049 Iditarod Sled Dog Race in 1993, 1996, 1998, and 2006.

34-year old Dennis Tremblay (#13) is from Saint-Michel-des-Saints, Quebec, Canada. He lists "truck driver for 20 years" as his occupation. He began mushing in 1989 and this is his first year racing in the IPSSSDR.

With just seconds before he is set to leave the Start, John Stewart (#8) tries to get untethered from the 4-wheeler which holds back the excited sled dog team. Staff rushes in and get him released. Stewart, age 23, is from Scotland. He has been running dogs for 17 years and has competed all over the world in multiple racing styles. This is the first time he has competed in the IPSSSDR.

Stacey Teasley (#1) and her team take off for the Pinedale stage. A special snow route has been carefully prepared in the north lane of US 191 through downtown Pinedale. Just west of town, the route veers to Ehman Lane, then to Hwy 352 along the Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail 33 miles to the Upper Green parking lot at the Bridger-Teton National Forest boundary.

Jerry Bath (#10) from Lander, Wyoming, gives a pep talk to one of his already very excited and ready to go dogs. Jerry, age 40, helped with the first IPSSSDR in the Lander stage stop 14 years ago and got hooked on sled dog racing. This is his first time racing in the IPSSSDR.

The crowd gave a warm and enthusiastic send-off to each of the teams as the left the Pinedale starting line. Reversing the race course and changing the start line to Pinedale allowed many more people to come watch the race.
