Wyoming Home Waters Initiative
Intended to help restore watersheds or sections of watersheds within Wyoming to proper functioning condition
by Wyoming Trout Unlimited
June 7, 2009

Throughout 2009, Trout Unlimited will celebrate its 50th anniversary as the nation’s largest and oldest coldwater conservation organization in America, and here in Wyoming we are celebrating by launching the Wyoming Home Waters Initiative. We hope communities across the state will join with us in celebrating and restoring our coldwater streams. The Wyoming Home Waters Initiative through Wyoming Trout Unlimited is intended to help restore watersheds or sections of watersheds within Wyoming to proper functioning condition and to encourage community involvement, interest in the outdoors, and conservation of natural resources.

In order to nominate a watershed; local communities, individuals, organizations, students, and anyone else interested throughout Wyoming will be encouraged to join with their local TU chapter for this program. The application process consists of questions aimed at determining the conservation need within the watershed, the recreational use of the watershed, the current land management practices within the watershed, and the importance of the watershed to the community. Supplementary items are strongly encouraged, such as letters of support from local groups, local artwork or photographs illustrating the watershed, and personal stories about the watershed. Please nominate your favorite watershed by contacting your local Trout Unlimited chapter. The watershed selected for the program will be studied for restoration opportunities and restoration work will begin. Restoration opportunities may include, but are not limited to, fish screens, fish passage, and habitat improvement. The Wyoming Council of Trout Unlimited has dedicated $10,000 to fund these initial efforts. The Council will continue to support the project by aiding in future fundraising opportunities. All applications are due to the Wyoming Trout Unlimited Conservation Committee by September 7, 2009.

For more details, contact your local Trout Unlimited Chapter or the Wyoming Council at 250 N. 1st St., Lander, WY 82520. For contact information on your local TU chapter, or additional information, visit www.wyomingtu.org.
