Purpose is to reduce fuels and stimulate aspen regeneration
by Bureau of Land Management
June 25, 2010

Editor’s note: Below is the media release from the Bureau of Land Management about the prescribed burn taking place in the Wyoming Range. Due to wet weather, this burn did not actually begin until Thursday, June 24th. The public can expect to see smoke from this fire over the weekend as the interior continues to burn.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) High Desert District plans to treat approximately 2,743 acres of conifer-encroached aspen stands with prescribed fire in the Red Canyon Allotment approximately 17 miles northwest of Big Piney and 30 miles west of Pinedale. The treatment is scheduled for the week of June 6, 2010, weather permitting.

The goals of the Red Canyon prescribed fire are to reduce the hazardous fuels within mechanically treated aspen stands and stimulate aspen regeneration to improve forest health and wildlife habitat.

Prescribed fire is a part of the Wyoming Front Aspen Regeneration Project, a multi-year stewardship agreement between BLM and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation to treat conifer-encroached aspen stands along the Wyoming Range Front. Additional partners and funding sources of this ongoing project include the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, Wyoming State Forestry Division, Wyoming Wildlife and Natural Resource Trust, and Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative.
