Prescribed burn for the Wyoming Range a success: Caution urged for burn area
by Bureau of Land Management
July 3, 2010

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) High Desert District treated approximately 2,743 acres of conifer-encroached aspen stands withprescribed fire in the Red Canyon Allotment during the week of June 21. There is still residual burning in the area, which lies approximately 17miles northwest of Big Piney and 30 miles west of Pinedale, and it may continue to smoke for a month or more. Visitors to the area are advised to use caution as trees may continue to fall in the burned area.

Prescribed fire is a part of the Wyoming Front Aspen Regeneration Project, a multi-year stewardship agreement between BLM and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation to treat conifer-encroached aspen stands along the Wyoming Range Front. The goals of the Red Canyon prescribed fire are to reduce the hazardous fuels within mechanically treated aspen stands and stimulate aspen regeneration to improve forest health and wildlife habitat.

Additional partners and funding sources for this ongoing project include the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, Wyoming State Forestry Division, Wyoming Wildlife and Natural Resource Trust, and Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative.
