BLM Pinedale Field Office seeks volunteers for bald eagle survey Jan. 8th
by Bureau of Land Management
December 28, 2010

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Pinedale Field Office (PFO) is calling for volunteers to conduct a midwinter bald eagle survey in coordination with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Saturday, January 8, 2011.

The annual midwinter survey is part of a national effort which began in 1979 to establish an index of the total winter bald eagle population in the lower 48 states by monitoring and estimating national and regional count trends, overall and by age class. Each January, volunteers count eagles along standard, non-overlapping survey routes.

A public meeting will be held at the PFO Rendezvous Room at 1625 West Pine in Pinedale, at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 to discuss survey methodology and eagle identification, as well as assign survey routes. Two-person observation teams are needed so that one person can safely drive while the other documents observed eagles.

To volunteer, or for additional information, contact Lisa Solberg at 307-367-5340. For more information on the national program, visit the U.S. Geological Survey website at http://srfs.wr.usgs.gov/research/indivproj.asp?SRFSProj_ID=2.
