Greater Wyoming Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) Sublette County Branch recently received a $3,000.00 donation from Encana Oil and Gas (USA) Inc. to support the development and professionally supported youth mentoring relationships in Pinedale, Marbleton and Big Piney. "This generous gift will help provide one-to-one adult mentors for Sublette County children," said Susan Anderson, BBBS Outreach Coordinator. "We appreciate Encana’s kindness to support BBBS and value their mission to contribute to the well-being of our community."

The branch office in Sublette County is 100% self-sustaining, funded entirely by donations, local contributions, and an AmeriCorps state grant. All donated funds support the community-based and site-based mentoring programs, which matches caring adults in the community with Sublette County youth ages 5-16.

The mission of BBBS is to provide children with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever, and our vision is that all children achieve success in life. BBBS helps create mentoring relationships for all children who need and want them, contributing to brighter futures, better schools, and a stronger community. The Sublette County BBBS branch began in 2004 with five "Big" and "Little" mentoring relationships, or "matches." Last year, BBBS is served 50 children in Sublette County.

This youth development organization has a proven track record and takes pride in the mentor matches they create. Bigs and Littles are carefully matched by trained professionals. "A tremendous amount of due diligence goes into the creation of the Big/Little relationship and also into its support," said Steve Hamaker, CEO of the Greater Wyoming Big Brothers Big Sisters State Office in Laramie.

Mentor matches spend time on activities they jointly select based on their interests. "In the community-based program, matches might do anything from fishing or horseback riding to cooking and crafts or a picnic in the park," said Anderson, "It really just depends on their interests. The activity doesn’t matter as much as the one-to-one attention and the benefit of having a positive adult role-model."
