Volunteers needed for National Public Lands Day Sept. 17
by Bureau of Land Management
September 4, 2011

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Pinedale Field Office and U.S. Forest Service (USFS) Pinedale Ranger District are inviting volunteers to participate in National Public Lands Day (NPLD) at the CCC Ponds Recreation Area on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Named for the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) camp located on the shores of Fremont Lake and Pine Creek during the New Deal program of the 1930s, the CCC Pond Recreation Area was developed in 1995 on BLM and USFS land and provides opportunities for the public to fish, hike and observe wildlife.

Activities to maintain this popular recreation area will include clearing brush along trails, repairing signs, installing a bench, monitoring bluebird nest boxes and improving shoreline fishing access. BLM Archaeologist Sam Drucker will also lead a discussion on the historical significance of the CCC camp.

Volunteers are needed to make any NPLD a success. To register to volunteer or for more information, please contact PFO Outdoor Recreation Planner Martin Hudson at 307-367-5315 or mhudson@blm.gov. Volunteers may also register on Sept. 17 at the CCC Ponds Recreation Area located a half mile past Lakeside Lodge on Fremont Lake Road in Pinedale, Wyo. Volunteers are asked to wear proper work attire and safety glasses. Lunch will be provided.

This event is being organized and sponsored by the BLM and USFS with support from the Town of Pinedale, Sublette County, Sublette County Conservation District, Wyoming Game and Fish Department, Sublette County School District, Sublette County Recreation Board, the Natural Resource Conservation Service, Ultra, Encana, SWEPI LP and QEP.

Established in 1994, NPLD is the nation's largest volunteer effort to improve and enhance public lands. More than 180,000 volunteers are expected to participate at more than 2,000 public lands sites and complete an estimated $15 million in improvements this year.
