Scammers impersonating police officers claiming arrest warrants issued
by Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office
January 8, 2015

ROCK SPRINGS - The Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office today (Thursday, Jan. 8th) issued a bulletin warning the public about phone scammers claiming falsely to be members of the Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Mike Lowell said his agency has taken a number of reports from citizens who received calls from a man claiming to be "Sergeant John Miller" of the Sheriff’s Office. The caller tells his intended victims that arrest warrants have been issued for them and they will be jailed if they do not immediately send in a money order.

The callers sometimes identify themselves as Rock Springs police officers or court officials of some sort.

"This is not a new scam, but whenever it resurfaces we like to get the word out to help avoid people being victimized," said Lowell. "The callers hope to frighten their victims into paying with threat tactics. There is no "Sergeant John Miller" at the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office, nor are we ever going to telephone people and tell them to pay any fines or court bonds."

Officials recommend the FBI’s website at www.fbi.gov/scams-safety/fraud for more information about how to protect yourself against fraud and scams.
