Big Sandy hiker found safe
by Sublette County Sheriff’s Office
July 25, 2015

PINEDALE, WYOMING – July 25, 2015: On the evening of Wednesday July 23rd, the Sublette County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a missing hiker in the Big Sandy Area. Gregory Harvey (41) of Salom, VA fell ill during a hiking trip Wednesday evening. A decision within the hiking group was made that Harvey and two other hikers would cancel the trip and head out to the trailhead. Harvey reportedly left camp for the trailhead around 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning and the other two hikers left around 10:00 a.m. When the two companions made it to the Big Sandy trailhead they could not locate Harvey, and his vehicle was still in the parking lot. Due to the time of the report it was decided they would start the search in the morning if Harvey had not made it out by then.

A search began the morning of Friday, July 24th, after an SCSO deputy went to the trailhead at approximately 8:00 a.m. and Harvey’s vehicle was still at the parking lot with no sign of him. Tip Top Search and Rescue deployed three members to the trailhead where Harvey was supposed to meet his party. They searched the Dad’s Lake area after a tip was received from another hiking party.

The search continued Saturday morning with Tip Top members using aerial assets, ground teams, and horse teams. At approximately 2:00 p.m. contact was made with the main hiking group where Harvey was found alive and well.
