Dancing with the Sublette Stars 2017
Fundraiser for the Children's Learning Center Earns Over $56,000
by Terry Allen
April 29, 2017

The Grand Ballroom Champions of this year’s Dancing with the Sublette Stars are Blake Coble and Tera Adams who danced to a contemporary tune. They also won The Patron’s Choice Award. Preview night was held on Thursday, April 27th and the finale was on Friday, April 28th at the Southwest Sublette County Pioneers Senior Center in Marbleton. Seven couples participated in the event, which is a fundraiser for the Children’s Learning Center of Sublette County.

Coincidentally, most of the time I sat with Blake’s wife and daughter Addie because their table just happened to be a good vantage point for most of my photos. Addie was happy to chat while she colored in her coloring book. But when Blake’s turn to dance came up, she just stared and seemed not to breathe…and when the music stopped she ran onto the dance floor and leapt into her father’s arms.

Brett Mclain and Shelly Brause danced an enthusiastic Broadway tune and won The People’s Choice Award.

Before the event I went back stage to take a few photos and found some very relaxed and playful groups who were happy to have their picture taken and others who seemed pretty nervous.

Fred Pflughoft and Rachel Weksler danced a dramatic Paso Doble dressed as James Bond and a bad Bond Girl. They got into their Danger Faces so well that I was afraid to post those pictures for fear I'd meet a bad end.

Relaxed and fun-loving Kelsea Vickery and Wil Gay danced a very emotional and personal Argentine Tango that made you feel like you were watching a Hollywood movie.

Jeff McCormick and Becky Olney danced to a crowd pleasing Foxtrot Jazz Fusion tune.

Scott Cheeney and Denise Hastings just looked like they had a lot of fun dancing a Cha Cha Pop Fusion and in fact, when I last saw Denise she was still dancing with all the little dance students that had attended.

Adam Hymas put on a huge Afro and he and Shayla Schell did a 70’s hustle that had half the audience entering a time machine.

I was very surprised at how well everyone danced. If people made mistakes I didn’t see any. They obviously put in a lot of hard work.

The choreographers, Brittany McGettrick and Francis Cuprill, did a fantastic job. The dancers learned ridiculously complex foot movements and lifts and no one hit the dirt.

The Hosts, Ward Wise and Sue Holz joked and said whatever came to mind like good adlibbers should and had folks laughing most of the time.

Bob Beiermann, Tyler Swafford and Tami Crosson were the judges and kept score and said nice things…but that Bob Beiermann…he is one, original funny guy. I’ll have to remember to interview him as I do my branding, roping and rodeo stories this summer.
The whole event was just very well done.

Stoney Vance of 307Q Bar-B-Q is my co-sponsor for this event and I’ve been having a lot of fun meeting his family and trying out some of his delicious smoked meat meals. I learned something else this week. His grandfather was Harvey "Slim" Stone, who is a Wyoming Cowboy Hall of Fame Inductee.

Slim Stone served in World War Two, worked 30 years as a cow boss, raised four kids and was respected by everyone he met. He also had some stories. Apparently he brought down game with a variety of tools. He once took down a bull elk with a dud rifle, 1 bullet, a pocket-knife, a stick, and a rope.

I’ll link his Wyoming Cowboy Hall of Fame story so you can read the whole thing, or you can stop by 307Q and Stoney will be happy to relate some of the stories while you try a smoked rib and chicken combo with beans or smoked mac and cheese.
